On the afternoon of October 20, 2023, the Business School held the Twenty-third Session of Academic Forum of Excellence 2023 of the lecture series of the Business School for the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Establishment of the Business School and the MBA Education Center in Conference Room A15 of the MBA Education Center of the Xueyuan South Road Campus of Central University of Finance and Economics. The lecture featured Dr. Chen Ning, a senior lecturer from the Marketing Department at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, as the guest speaker. More than twenty people, including faculty, doctoral students, master students, and undergraduates, participated in this event.
The session was chaired by Deputy Chen Jinliang from the Business School. Prior to the start of the lecture, Deputy Dean Chen Jinliang gave a comprehensive introduction to Dr. Chen Ning's background. Dr. Chen Ning earned his Bachelor of Science from Tsinghua University, his Master of Management from Tsinghua University, and his Ph.D. in Marketing from the University of New South Wales, Australia. He is currently a senior lecturer and doctoral supervisor in the Marketing Department at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, and also holds a position as a research fellow at the Sports Industry Development Research Center of Tsinghua University. His primary research focuses on tourist sports consumer psychology and behavior, as well as broader environmental psychology based on human-land relationships.
Mr. Chen’s lecture focuses on “The relationships among personal social identity, CSR, and business performance.” This research, grounded in social identity theory and stakeholder theory, investigates the connections between the three dimensions of individual/personal social identity and organizational performance, with four types of corporate social responsibility acting as mediators. An empirical study of 494 individuals from over 400 companies forms the basis of this research, which employs structural equation modeling (SEM) to discover that, taking into account the various influences of corporate social responsibility, the three levels of individual/personal social identity offer three different paths to business performance. Company roles (e.g., founders, senior managers, and regular employees) were further distinguished and tested based on their moderating effects on the structural model, indicating the contingency role of company positions.
Following the presentation, teachers and students engaged in a lively discussion and exchange on topics such as empirical research, data collection, and extended studies, related to Mr. Chen's lecture theme.
